The Cold Hard Truth About Lies

The Cold Hard Truth About Lies

Everyone lies for so many different reasons it’s impossible to make a complete list. The most common motive for lying of course is avoiding punishment. Staying out of trouble is usually the primary motivator for big lies regardless of a person’s age. Like lies that help avoid a speeding ticket even though you knew you were doing 84 mph or telling the boss you had a flat tire. Most serious lies involve a threat of serious harm if the lie is found out: the loss of a job, freedom, a relationship, a person’s reputation, or even the loss of life. And even though they can’t get in much more trouble, a person in prison who admits to their guilt is rare indeed. The lying never stops.
Other reasons for uttering untruths include protection of ourselves and others, maintaining our privacy, avoiding embarrassment, and common everyday politeness. For instance, we’ve all sat down before a plate of something we’d rather not eat, and yet when we’re finished, we can’t stop complimenting the cook on how delicious it was while praying we’re never invited back to dinner.
The most common lie is the response we all give when asked how we’re doing. “I’m fine” is rarely a truthful response from anyone. With all the craziness and bad going on in our lives, not to mention the day-to-day aches and pains, how can any of us be fine? And yet we smile and continue to do our best. Lying flawlessly when necessary.
